Helpful at the desk, alert at the door.

Santa Cruz is a friendly town, and most properties want security that matches. A hotel guest asking for directions, a patient looking for the right suite and a tenant locked out of the laundry room all want someone helpful, not someone who looks like trouble. An unarmed officer fills that role and still notices everything.

That covers most of our posts: lobby and front desk coverage, guest and vendor sign-in, rounds of hallways, stairwells and parking, and a written note of anything a manager should see. It suits lodging, offices, medical buildings, campuses, apartment communities and downtown shops alike.

When a property needs a firmer presence for part of the day, an armed post can be added for just those hours. For a busy summer weekend or a big night at a venue, extra unarmed officers can join without a long commitment.

Small moments the officer handles

Much of an unarmed officer’s day is made up of small moments that never reach a manager. A guest who can’t find the parking entrance. A tenant who locked their key fob in the laundry room. A delivery driver at the wrong building. A patient’s family member who is upset about the wait.

Each one gets handled politely and quickly, and anything worth knowing goes into the shift report. Over time, those notes show patterns, like a sign that keeps confusing visitors or a door that never latches, that are easy to fix once someone writes them down.

Pricing an unarmed officer in Santa Cruz

Lobby, desk and front-of-house posts follow the posted-officer rates on our security guard services page: most run $38 to $52 an hour in 2026 Santa Cruz figures, and your own number comes from the hours and the duties.

For example, a student apartment building near campus wants an officer at the entrance from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays while classes are in session. Sixteen hours a week works out to about 69 hours a month, and at $42 an hour that’s around $2,898 a month. Over winter break and the summer, the building pauses the post or swaps it for patrol stops.

Duties push the rate up more than anything else. An officer who signs in guests and vendors, keeps a package log, walks stairwells and parking and writes up every odd moment for the manager lands near the top of the scale, around $64. Holidays, last-minute starts and longer overnight shifts add to it. A lobby post with a short round list and the same hours every week holds near the lower figure. We walk the property with you at no charge, then send a written proposal with the duties, hours and rate, with no long-term contract.

A few useful answers

Common questions.

Does an unarmed officer really discourage trouble?

Yes. A uniformed officer who is paying attention is a strong deterrent on their own, and most people looking for an easy target simply move along.

Can an officer support our hotel's front desk overnight?

Yes. Overnight lobby posts are some of the most common shifts we staff in town.

Is helping visitors part of the officer's day?

Very much so. Pointing guests the right way, signing in vendors and walking a tenant out to the car after dark all come with the post.

Can we add officers for a summer weekend?

Yes. Extra officers can be scheduled for peak weekends and dropped once things settle down.

Can an unarmed officer ask someone to leave the property?

Yes. The officer asks politely, follows the steps in your post orders if the person refuses and writes up what happened.
