Protection that suits a laid-back town

Santa Cruz is a fleece-and-sandals sort of place, and a well-known person strolling downtown beside a stiff escort in a dark suit draws more stares here than in any big city. Our protective details are built with that in mind. A background-checked officer stays near the person you want protected, notices who is paying a little too much attention and keeps the day on schedule, all while fitting into a town that dresses down.

Details suit leaders who live by the bay and work over the hill, executives visiting from out of town, speakers and performers booked downtown, employees who have drawn unwanted attention at work or online, and families hosting a famous friend for the weekend. Local companies bring investors, partners and reporters to Santa Cruz year round.

A detail can be one officer for a single lunch meeting or a small rotation that covers a whole visit, booked month to month. Officers protect the principal on foot and at every stop, while your own driver or a car service handles the transport. The company is insured, and each officer assigned to a principal has cleared a background check.

A dry run of the day, free of charge

Before the principal arrives, the officer who will lead the detail takes the itinerary for a test run. We visit each stop at about the hour it appears on the schedule, because a coffee shop at eight in the morning and the same room at noon are two different places. We look for the entrance with the shortest walk from the car, the side door staff use, the table in a dining room that faces the door and a second way out of every building.

Those notes become a short written plan that each officer on the detail keeps close: the order of stops, the host to ask for at each one, where the car pulls up and what changes if a meeting runs long or the fog pushes an outdoor lunch inside. A copy comes to you with the written quote. If the same person visits every season, the plan stays on file and we revisit only the stops that are new.

Over the hill and back

Highway 17 is the main road between Santa Cruz and San Jose, a winding climb over the Santa Cruz Mountains that carries heavy commuter and summer traffic. Plenty of leaders who make their home near the beach spend their working hours on the far side. An officer can meet the principal at the front door in the morning, ride along over the mountain, cover the office hours and make the trip home at night, with your own driver or a car service at the wheel.

Air travel follows the same pattern. Airline passengers usually land at San Jose International, on the valley side of the mountains, so the detail can be waiting in the terminal and stay with the principal all the way to the coast. Guests on private flights can be met at the airfield where they land.

Each leg is timed during the dry run, which leaves the passenger free to work, call home or simply rest on the way.

Visiting speakers, company days and a downtown stage

Visiting scholars, authors and speakers come to town through the academic year. When a guest of honor wants someone nearby, the officer settles the building, the entrance and the timing with the host first, then stays close from the parking area to the podium and back again.

Company occasions work much the same way. For an investor visit, a board meeting or a product reveal at an office, an officer can hold the front door, check arrivals against the guest list and keep the executive suite quiet. If the building already has one of our office building officers, the post and the detail coordinate through the same manager on your side. A leadership retreat at a beach-area hotel gets the same care, and hotel security officers can hold the lobby overnight if the group wants it.

Downtown, a performer or lecturer on a downtown stage gets an officer at the stage door, a clear path to the green room and company on the walk out after the final bow. When the evening draws a crowd as well, our event officers handle the doors and the line while the detail keeps its focus on one person.

At home

Residential coverage can be as light or as steady as the household prefers. An officer can sit at the gate or the front door logging deliveries and visitors, walk the yard and driveway on a rhythm you pick, and stay through the night while the family travels. On foggy evenings, when the street goes quiet early, a person on the property makes the house look lived in.

When a full overnight post is more than the home needs, patrol visits at randomized times can carry the late hours, and someone watching your cameras live can fill the gaps between stops. Most details are unarmed, and an armed officer can join or lead the detail when the reason behind the request calls for a firmer presence.

Discretion runs through all of it. Addresses, travel times and guest lists stay with the officers who need them, and the evening report goes only to the contact you name: where the principal went, who came close and what the officer handled, with photos whenever something deserved a second look.

What goes into the cost of a detail

Protective work is priced per officer for each hour on duty, and the plan you approve sets the total. The main drivers are the size of the detail, the length of each day, the number of stops, overnight and weekend hours, armed or unarmed coverage and the lead time before the first day. Summer weekends and graduation season push the figure up.

To get started, call (831) 273-3449 or send the dates, the stops you already know about and what prompted the request through our contact page. We will do the dry run with you for free and follow up with a written quote listing the officers, the hours and the rate.

A few useful answers

Common questions.

Can an officer make the Highway 17 commute with our executive?

Yes. The officer meets the principal at home, rides over the mountain in your car or a car service, stays through the workday and makes the return trip, on whichever days you book.

Who handles the driving between stops?

Your own driver or a car service. The officer rides along or meets the car at each stop, and the dry run times every leg so the day stays on schedule.

Will a protective officer look out of place downtown or at the beach?

No. Officers dress for wherever the day leads, from a blazer at a board dinner to casual clothes on the sand, and keep enough distance that the principal can talk freely.

Can an officer stay with a guest speaker through a lecture or conference?

Yes. We settle the building, the entrance and the schedule with the host ahead of time, and the officer stays with the guest from arrival through the talk, the reception and the walk back to the car.

Can a visitor who returns every season keep the same officer?

We work to put the same officer with a returning principal, and the plan from the last visit stays on file, so only the new stops need a fresh look.

Is armed protection available in Santa Cruz?

Yes. Most details are unarmed, and an armed officer can be added for part or all of a visit when the setting or the concern behind the request calls for it.
